This lightweight metal detector is a great way for young explorers to discover common metal objects.
Featuring a sensitivity and volume control, the detector emits a beeping sound when close to metal, and the flashing indicator lights speed up and change colour.
NB: This is a role-play toy and only works to a shallow depth. It’s not a serious treasure-seeking piece of hi-tech (& expensive) equipment.
What our testers said
“It’s cool how it lights up.” – Boy aged 5
“I like that you have to move slowly as it makes it feel like you are investigating!” – Boy aged 8
What our experts think
This digital metal detector is great for encouraging children to get outside and investigate the world around them. Our testers found this a fun, active way of learning about scientific properties of objects – for example they learned that not all things that look like metal are in fact made of metal.
This prompted them to set up an experiment where they confirmed this, using the metal detector and a magnet. Some of our testers (and carers) found it tricky at first to work out the level needed to make the detector work, but once they worked it out, it was fairly straightforward.
Our testers enjoyed running around the garden and role playing as ‘investigators’ to see if they found things, even if the only treasure they found was a broken peg!
